"Health food" refers to the types of food that are considered, claimed or thought to be especially beneficial to people's health. These health foods are typically taken as part of their regular diet, special diet, or as dietary supplements.

A healthy diet typically involves the intake of appropriate amounts of all nutrients, as well as an adequate amount of water. Nutrients are usually obtained from different foods.

The different types of nutrients in health foods can be classified as:

  • Protein - so-called 'body-building' food that are needed for the repair and growth of the human body. Protein consists of amino acids.

  • Carbohydrates - so-called 'energy-giving food' that are needed for the endurance and fortitude in the performance of daily tasks.

  • Fat - so-called 'protective' food that are needed for the formation of cell membranes and later conversion into energy.

  • Minerals - chemical elements that support biochemical reactions within the body that contribute to the maintainance of optimal health.

  • Vitamins - organic compounds required by human beings for normal growth and development. Some vitamins are classified as antioxidants which retard and eliminate the damaging free radicals that wreak havoc on cells.

These nutrients in health foods are vital for the prevention of many chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer and obesity.


Health Food Sources

Plants and animals comprise the bulk of the generally-accepted sources of food. Salt, water, and some forms of fungi and algae are also considered food.

However, many of the so-called 'health foods' are sourced from plants as these are where many of the naturally-occuring nutrients mentioned above can be found. Fruits and vegetables are the types of food that are plant-sourced. Fresh or dried forms of these fruits and vegetables are consumed to derive the healthy nutrients found therein. In fact, herbs, spices and many dietary supplements come from these foods, as well as from other parts of plants like roots/rhizomes, leaves, barks and stems.
