Amino Acid benefits are very crucial to the existence of humans and other living organisms.
Amino acids are molecules that perform vital roles in biochemistry. Amino acids are known as the building blocks of protein. They are used by cells in the body for a variety of crucial functions, most notable of which is as an aid to the metabolic process.
Amino acids are obtained by humans from various food sources, particularly those that have high protein content. The body breaks the proteins down to their constituent parts, and the cells use these components to build the specific types of protein each of them needs. |
Amino acids facilitate the repair of the body's proteins, i.e. muscles, organs, nails, hair, skin, ligaments, and glands. Deficiency in even one of these amino acids will lead to the deterioration of the proteins just so the body can compensate for the lacking amino acid. Consequently, the health of the individual may be severely compromised.
Amino acids cannot be stored by the body for later use, unlike fat and starch. As such, amino acid should be present in everyday food.
There are 20 Standard Amino Acids. These amino acids are naturally incorporated into polypeptides and are directly encoded by the genetic code. Humans are known to produce only 10 of them. The remaining 10 are obtained through the diet, and these are called the essential amino acids.
The 10 essential amino acids are:
The 10 amino acids that can be produced by the human body, through the liver, are the non-essential amino acids. They are:
In addition to the aforementioned Standard Amino Acids, there is also a huge number of Non-Standard Amino Acids. These amino acids are formed by the modification after translation in the synthesis of protein. These modifications are often essential for the function or regulation of a protein.
Most amino acids can be produced in two forms - either a D or L form.
These letters stand for the manner in which the amino acid spiral is wound up - D is for the right-wound type and L for the mirror left-wound type.
Human amino acid is the L type and it is for this reason that many people prefer to use amino acid supplements that contain the L type amino acid.
