Proline Benefits

Proline benefits are known to work best on the various connective tissues of the body, as well in the muscles and in the skin.

Proline is an amino acid essential for the production of collagen and cartilage. Proline plays a major role in keeping the muscles and joints flexible. It also helps reduce sagging and wrinkling of the skin. Furthermore, proline also helps the body break down proteins for use in creating healthy cells in the body.

Proline is a non-essential amino acid, meaning it can be produced within the human body. Proline can be synthesized from glutamic acid. The L-Proline form of the amino acid is the type contained within the cartilage.

It has been observed that healthy levels of Vitamin C in the individual may help enhance the effectivity of proline.

Proline BenefitsEven as the body is able to product the proline amino acid, it can also be found in several food sources. The following are the typical food sources of proline:

  • meat
  • dairy products
  • eggs

Proline supplements can usually be obtained in the form of stand-alone capsules and tablets. However, proline is also often included in supplements marketed for treatment of specific conditions, such as arthritis, or back pain, or in sports drinks or bars marketed for bodybuilders and athletes. Between 500 milligrams and 1,000 milligrams, combined with vitamin C, is the recommended daily dose for proline.

Natural levels of L-proline tend to diminish as people grow older. This phenomenon might possibly account for many of the debilitating bone and joint problems noted in older individuals. Taking L-proline supplements may help restore flexibility to joints.

Women are known to be more prone to bone problems like osteoporosis, so supplementation of proline might be recommended to some. However, women who are pregnant or nursing should consult their physicians before taking such supplements.

People who are recovering from injury, as well as those who suffered from burns, might also want to consider supplementation of proline, as it may contribute to speeding up the healing process.

Athletes and bodybuilders who subject their body to intensive and rigorous workouts may also consider taking a supplement containing proline to avoid loosing muscle mass.

Individuals with liver or kidney disorders should only take proline and other amino acid supplements after consulting their physicians.
