Theanine Benefits
|
Theanine benefits are believed to primarily affect the functions of the nerves and the brain.
Theanine is a glutamic acid analog or amino acid derivative commonly found in tea (infusions of camellia sinensis), and most notably in its less oxidized form like green tea . Theanine reportedly makes up about 50% of the free amino acids found in tea. This substance is said to be largely responsible for the "umami" (or savory/brothy) taste of green tea.
The theanine content in tea is said to decrease with leaf age. As such, the young buds of the tea plant contain higher levels of theanine, which are converted to catechins as the leaves mature.

In addition to green tea, theanine has likewise been found in the edible mushroom boletus badius.
Theanine possesses a chemical structure very similar to the amino acid glutamate, which naturally occurs in the human body. Glutamate helps transmit nerve impulses in the brain. Some of the theanine benefits appear to be similar to glutamate, and some effects seem to block glutamate.
Also known as L-Theanine, this substance is believed to have the ability to cross the blood-brain barrier and this explains its capacity to positively affect the brain chemistry.
L-theanine was discovered as an important constituent of green tea in 1949 and was given approval in Japan for unlimited use in all foods, including chocolates, soft drinks, and herb teas, except infant foods, in 1964.
L-theanine is believed to reach maximum levels in the blood between 30 minutes to 2 hours after ingestion. The total duration of effect is estimated to be from 8 to 12 hours.
Pregnant or nursing women should avoid the use of theanine as its effects on them have not yet been established. Likewise, individuals who are on anti-hypertensive drugs and on stimulants are advised to avoid theanine.
The following are the believed to be the theanine benefits:
Theanine may help lower mental and physical stress;
Theanine may help fight Alzheimer's disease as it may help improve cognition and other brain functions;
Theanine may help enhance the mood;
Theanine may help improve concentration and focus;
Theanine may aid in reducing the symptoms of schizophrenia;
Theanine may help lower blood pressure;
Theanine may help in strengthening the immune system due to its antibacterial effects;
Theanine may help fight anxiety as it is known to possess tranquilizing and relaxing effects.
Theanine may have cancer-preventative properties, though clinical studies on this are still limited.
