EGCG Benefits

EGCG benefits have been thrust into the spotlight for the last several decades as interest in the health benefits of green tea have heightened.

EGCG is an antioxidant catechin officially called epigallocatechin gallate. It is the ester of epigallocatechin and gallic acid, and is the most abundant catechin in tea.

EGCG is found in high concentrations in green tea and white tea, the two types of teas that least undergo the oxidation process. The leaf bud and the first leaves of the camellia sinensis tea plant contain the most abundant amounts of EGCG as the level of its presence decreases with the age of the leaves.

EGCG BenefitsEGCG is just one of several antioxidant flavonoid compounds found in green and white tea. The others include epicatechin, epicatechin gallate and proanthocyanidins. These compounds and several related catechins are believed to be responsible for the health benefits associated with the consumption of green tea and white tea.

Increasing evidence suggests that EGCG imparts anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and immunosuppressive benefits to individuals. Aside from green and white tea, EGCG can also be found in many supplements.

Pregnant and nursing women should avoid the use of EGCG.

The following are the EGCG benefits that may be derived from this antioxidant:

  • EGCG may help reduce the risk of cancer (i.e. bladder, breast, lung, colorectal, pancreatic etc.) as it helps strengthen the immune system. It is also believed to suppress substances that lead to the formation of tumors.

  • EGCG may help protect against cardiovascular diseases like heart attacks and strokes as the substance helps prevent arterial inflammation. It also helps reduce the "bad cholesterol" levels in the body.

  • EGCG may help promote joint and bone health, thus helping fight arthritis, tendonitis, rheumatism, bursitis and the like.

  • EGCG may help control blood sugar and hence, be a helpful tool in the treatment of diabetes.

  • EGCG may help protect the liver.

  • EGCG may help with weight loss as it helps burn fat, increase metabolism and reduce the storage of fat.

  • EGCG may help in the treatment of individuals with HIV.

  • EGCG may be help in the reduction of anxiety.
