Resveratrol benefits have been in the spotlight for the last several decades as more and more research is done on the healthy properties found in natural foods.
Resveratrol is an antioxidant polyphenolic compound that is believed to possess many health benefits. It is found in the skin, stems and leaves of red grapes, grape juice, cranberries, bilberries, blueberries, peanuts and red wine. One liter of red wine typically contains 1.5 to 3 milligrams of resveratrol.

The studies on resveratrol became heightened when scientists wanted to get answers on the so-called "French Paradox". This refers to the age-old question on why the French people have a lower incidence of heart and cardiovascular diseases despite the fact that their diet consists of a large amount of food high in saturated fats and that they smoke cigarettes a lot. They zeroed in on the red wine staple of the diet and the fact that resveratrol was present in the wine.
In test tube studies, resveratrol has been shown to effectively scavenge (neutralize) free radicals and other oxidants and inhibit the oxidation of low density lipoprotein (LDL).
It has likewise been found that resveratrol is more powerful than vitamin E by as much as 10 to 20 times in protecting against LDL oxidation, which has been associated with the development of cardiovascular diseases. Resveratrol is also thought to discourage the growth of tumors by blocking the action of Cox-2, an enzyme that researchers believe contributes to the development of colon cancer.
Resveratrol supplements are currently available in the form of red wine extracts and red grape extracts. Resveratrol supplements may contain anywhere from 10-50 mg of resveratrol, but the effective doses for chronic disease prevention in humans are not known.
Currently, there is as yet no Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for resveratrol. There are as yet no side effects, toxic symptoms, or drug interactions reported in connection with consumption of resveratrol.
The safety of resveratrol-containing supplements during pregnancy and lactation has not been established. As such, pregnant women should avoid consuming wine as a source of resveratrol.
