Acerola Benefits
|
Acerola benefits have long been known in places such as Mexico, South and Central America, and the Caribbean. Acerola berries are known for their astringent and antioxidant properties.
Acerola generally refers to the bright red to orange fruits of the tropical shrub malphigia emarginata. These fruits are fleshy and are about the size of a cherry. They are subdivided into three obscure lobes and have a sour or tart taste. The taste may become sweet if the fruits are grown well. However, the acerola berry is said to be best eaten when it is still colored green, and it is yet to fully ripen. Many vitamins and nutrients are lost as it turns ripe. |
These berries are typically eaten fresh or in the form of jams and jellies. Acerola fruits are an important source of natural vitamin C as well as antioxidants. The acerola berry is known by various other names such as Barbados cherry and West Indian cherry.
The acerola berry comes from the acerola tree that typically reaches a height of almost 10 to 15 feet. The tree has numerous strong branches with evergreen leaves that join in a crown. The flowers are typically colored pink to white and have five petals.
Aside from vitamin C, acerola berry is also rich in iron, magnesium, calcium, phosphorus, pantothenic acid and beta-carotene.
Individuals who just underwent cancer surgery and those undergoing chemotherapy should avoid the use of acerola supplementation. Similar precaution should also be observed for people with iron-overload disease, as well as those with high oxalate levels that can contribute to formation of kidney stones.
