Dates refer to the fruits that grow on the palm tree belonging to the genus Phoenix. The tree is among the oldest ones known to man and may have originated around the banks of the Nile and Euphrates rivers in the Persian areas. The date palm grows up to a height of anywhere from 20 to 25 meters, thus making it of medium-size. It possesses leaves that measure from 3 to 5 meters long, and has about 150 leaflets. The entire span of the crown ranges from 6 to 10 meters. |
The date fruit is composed of an outer fleshy part and a hardened inner portion which contains the seed. It is ovular in shape, measures about 6 centimeters long, and has a brown color when ripe. The taste of the flesh of the fruit is very sweet, and is often described as a mix of sugar and honey.
Dates are an important part of the diet in the Middle East. They are traditionally eaten, along with milk and yogurt, to break the fast during the Muslim holy month of Ramadhan. Dates are mostly consumed as is, but they can also be stuffed with such fillings as nuts, fruits and cheese. Dates may also be eaten as components of salads or as part of savory dishes.
