|
Aloe vera benefits are quite numerous and diverse. The mucilage or the aloe gel is used as a general herbal tonic or cure-all in the treatment of many different disorders and conditions.
Aloe vera is a stemless succulent plant that grows up to 100 centimeters tall. The plant typically spreads by offsets. Aloe vera leaves are thick and fleshy and its margins are peppered with small white thorns. The leaves are colored green, even as some varieties show white flecks on the upper and lower surfaces of the stem.
The flowers of the aloe vera appear during the summer on a spike up to 90 centimeters tall. The flowers are pendulous, possessing a yellow tubular corolla. |
Aloe vera was believed to have originated in the eastern and southern portions of Africa but now grows extensively in tropical areas of the world.
The medicinal and health properties of aloe vera are mainly concentrated on the mucilage or gel that comes from the underlying inner portion of the leaves and stems of the aloe plant. It is a jellylike and clear material that is rich in water. As such, the gel forms the main components of aloe vera products that are incorporated in a wide array of culinary, medical and cosmetic products.
