Cauliflower Benefits

Cauliflower benefits are highly regarded in almost all corners of the globe. It is one of several vegetables in the species brassica oleracea, which also includes broccoli, cabbage, kale, and brussels sprouts.

Cauliflower is an annual flowering plant that reproduces by seed. Cauliflower is typically colored white because the leaves of the plant shield the florets from the sun as they grow.  This prevents chlorophyll from fully developing in the plant and thus preventing it to have a green color similar to broccoli. Cauliflower grows best during the months of December through March and is the time when it is most plentiful.

Cauliflower BenefitsCauliflower has a compressed head, called 'curd', that is usually about six inches in diameter. It is made up of undeveloped flower buds.  The flowers are attached to a central stalk. Typically, only the head of the cauliflower is eaten, while the stalk and surrounding thick, green leaves are used in vegetable broth or discarded.

Cauliflower is nutritious, and may be eaten roasted, boiled, fried, steamed, raw or pickled. It is often included as part of vegetable and meat dishes. As a standalone dish, cauliflower is often served with a cheese sauce.

The following are the health food nutrients found in cauliflower:

Two important ingredients of cauliflower are indole-3-carbinol, or 13C, and the photonutrient sulforaphane. These ingredients are said to help prevent the occurrence of breast cancers by inhibiting the growth of tumors.  Cauliflower also contains glucosinolates and thiocyanates which improve the liver's ability to neutralize potentially toxic substances.

However, it is also important to note that cauliflower contains purines, naturally-occurring substances typically found in plants, animals, and humans.  The excessive consumption of food with purines may lead to health problems since these can lead to excess accumulation of uric acid.  Gout may result from excessive uric acid. As such, people with kidney problems or gout may want to limit the consumption of purine-containing foods such as cauliflower.
