Chili belongs to a domesticated specie of the plant genus capsicum that's native to Mexico and South America. In the United States, it is commonly known as the chili pepper but in the United Kingdom, the sweet varieties are called peppers and the hot varieties are known as chillies. Its forms are varied, from large to small, sweet to sour, very hot to bland.
The chili plant is a herbaceous annual, with a stem that's densely branched. The plant reaches a height of up to 60 inches. The plant possesses single white flowers that bear the fruit. These chili fruits are colored green when unripe and turn to red when they become ripe. While the species can tolerate most climates, they are especially productive in warm and dry climates.
The chili's greatest use in health comes from conventional medicine. The chili is used as an ingredient in various tonics, laxatives, sedatives, and hay fever remedies.
The following are some of the active constituents in chili: capsaicin, Vitamin C, 1,8-cineole, 2-octanone, alanine, alpha-carotene, alpha-linoleic acid, beta-carotene, betaine, campesterol, capsanthin, carvone, fiber, folacin, glutamic acid, hesperidin, isoleucine, kaempferol, manganese, myrcene, p-coumaric acid, potassium, proline, quercetin, thiamine, thujone, tryptophan, valine, zeaxanthin and zinc.
