|
Chive benefits are thought to be especially effective in the digestive, circulatory and respiratory systems.
The chive is the smallest of the Allium family, a large genus of about 500 species of strongly-smelling perennials with bulbs or underground stems.
The chive is native to Asia and Europe, and has been cultivated since the early days to be used as a vegetable, culinary flavoring, and a medicinal plant. |
Scientifically known as allium schoenoprasum, the chive has a long, hollow, grass-like stalk that grows up to about 24 inches long. The chive generally grows in clumps. The chive has a light lavender-pink, pom-pom-like flower that helps beautify gardens, and may also be used as a garnish for salad dishes. The chive is also beneficial to rose bushes, since the plant emit an odor which discourages aphids.
The active constituents of chive are the following: alanine, allyl-mercaptan, beta-carotene, caffeic acid, citric acid, ferulic acid, glutamic acid, glycine, histidine, Isoleucine, kaempferol, malic acid, methionine, niacin, octacosanol, quercetin, thiamine, and vitamin C.
