Clove benefits have been known since the ancient times for their carminative, antihelmintic, antiseptic and anesthetic properties.
The clove is the pungent and aromatic dried floral buds of a tree in the family Myrtaceae. The flowers and oil of the clove has been used for culinary and medicinal uses for centuries. The clove is native to the Moluccas (now in Indonesia ) and in India but is now cultivated in many parts of the globe.

The clove tree is pyramidal shaped. It is broad-leafed evergreen plant that grows in tropical areas. When fully grown, the clove tree can go up as high as thirty or forty feet. The clove flower buds give out a pale color at first, and then gradually turn green, and when they turn bright red, they are ready to be gathered.
The clove was one of the first globally-traded spices in the world, going as far back as 1721 B.C.E. They were highly prized by the Romans and the Chinese. The Chinese were known to chew them before an audience with the emperor to make sure their breath was fresh.
The spice trade, including clove, led to great competition among European seafaring nations. The Dutch and the Portuguese were involved in a long tussle over competition for cloves; and this trade war was one of the many that would be fought by different Europeans colonizers involving spices.
Eugenol comprises 72 to 90% of the essential oil extracted from cloves. It is also responsible for the pungent aroma of clove. The other important essential oil constituents of clove oil include acetyl eugenol, beta- caryophyllene and vanillin; crategolic acid; tannins, gallotannic acid, methyl salicylate (painkiller); flavonoids eugenin, kaempferol; tri terpenoids like oleanolic acid, stigmasterol and campesterol; and several sesquiterpenes.
Clove is commonly put as a spice in meals and dishes. It is also used as an enhancement to herbal teas and infusions. Clove oil can also be used to treat toothaches. The oil can be soaked in cotton and it can then be placed next to the problematic tooth for relief from pain.
