Crocetin is a carotenoid that is said to contribute the most to the healthy properties of saffron. In animal tests, it has been shown to improve cerebral oxygenation and shows benefits on the atherosclerosis and arthritis treatment. In animal studies, crocetin inhibits skin tumor promotion. Some studies have also shown that saffron extract or its active constituents, crocetin and crocin may have benefits on people suffered from neurodegenerative disorders accompanying memory impairment.
Utmost care must be taken in the consumption of saffron. Doctors strictly recommend the use of saffron during pregnancy as the herb possess the property of raising the body temperature.
