- Vitamins - organic compounds required by human beings for normal growth and development. Some vitamins are classified as antioxidants which retard and eliminate the damaging free radicals that wreak havoc on cells.
These nutrients in health foods are vital for the prevention of many chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer and obesity.
Health Food Sources
Plants and animals comprise the bulk of the generally-accepted sources of food. Salt, water, and some forms of fungi and algae are also considered food.

However, many of the so-called 'health foods' are sourced from plants as these are where many of the naturally-occuring nutrients mentioned above can be found. Fruits and vegetables are the types of food that are plant-sourced. Fresh or dried forms of these fruits and vegetables are consumed to derive the healthy nutrients found therein.
