Iron Benefits

Iron is a trace mineral that is essential for various body functions including hemoglobin formation, brain development, muscle activity and body temperature regulation. As part of the pigment in the blood called hemoglobin, it facilitates the transportation of oxygen to the cells thus making it responsible for cell respiration. Iron also provides the blood with its dark red color.

Iron is also related to the health of the brain as it utilizes about 20% of the oxygen found in the blood. As iron facilitates oxygen supply to the blood, the mineral thus becomes an important actor in the maintenance and functioning of the brain. Iron is also a vital actor in the metabolic process.

Traces of iron can be found in the liver, spleen, bone marrow and in the muscles.

Iron can be derived from dietary sources, as well as from stand-alone supplements that are available in many health stores.

On the other end of the spectrum, high blood levels of free ferrous iron react may aid in producing free radicals that can damage DNA and other cellular components, and may cause cancer. Iron toxicity can damage cells in the heart, liver and elsewhere, which can cause coma, shock, liver failure, coagulopathy, adult respiratory distress syndrome, long-term organ damage, and even death.
