The cacao beans or seeds come from the fruit of the cacao tree that is native to the tropical regions of the Americas. The beans/seeds are typically ground into powder to form chocolate. Cacao trees are small, typically growing to a height of only 20 feet. The cultivation of these trees normally requires a humid climate with regular rainfall and good soil. The tree also bears flowers that grow in clusters on the trunk and branches. The fruit is called the cacao pod, and it is oval in shape, about 15 to 30 centimeters long and 8 to 10 centimeters wide. The pod contains anywhere from 20 to 60 beans/seeds which are embedded in a white pulp.
Cacao beans are said to contain more than 300 identifiable chemicals. Among these are caffeine and theobromine, which are said to be stimulants that work with other components of the beans to help explain people’s love and passion for chocolates.
Other notable constituents of cacao beans are the following: flavonoids, phenylethylalamine, anandamide, arginine, magnesium, sulfur, oleic acid, and tryptophan.
It is said that cacao beans contain more flavonoid antioxidants than most other vegetables and fruits, and even green tea.
Cacao is said to stimulate the production of serotonin and endorphins, and contains phenylethylalamine and anandamide, two chemicals that elevate the mood and help increase concentration.
