The grapefruit is a subtropical citrus tree that produces a sour and somewhat bitter fruit. Grapefruits have yellow-orange skins and oblate spheroid shapes. Its diameter ranges from 4 to 6 inches. The flesh of the grapefruit is subdivided into different segments. It may be colored pink, red or white and is tart and acidic.

Grapefruit trees are evergreen and typically grow to a height of 16 to 20 feet. The leaves have a dark green color and can grow up to 6 inches long. The tree also produces white flowers.
The United States is currently the biggest producer of grapefruits, with numerous orchards found in states such as Arizona, California, Florida and Texas. China, South Africa and Mexico are also big producers of grapefruits.
Grapefruits were formerly grown as ornamentals but due to the high antioxidant content of the fruits, they have become popularly grown.
Grapefruits are popularly taken in the morning during breakfast. In spite of its citric and acidic nature, the grapefruit actually promotes alkalinity as it has been found to treat bodily disorders that are normally associated with excess acidity.
