Krill Oil Benefits

Krill oil benefits are being increasingly recognized by health buffs and nutritionists throughout the world. Krill oil is acknowledged as "heart-friendly" mainly due to its abundant content of beneficial fatty acids.

Krill oil comes from a species of shrimp-like marine crustaceans that are found in the waters of Antarctica. Krill are found in many of the world's oceans but krill oil supplements are derived from those in the Antarctic waters, called Euphausia superba, due to their perceived relative purity and cleanliness.

Krill usually feed on phytoplanktons. In turn, many ocean and sea animals feed on krill - and these range from fish or penguins to seals and whales. Krill is thus considered as belonging to lower levels of the food chain. However, a decline in the population of krill may cause substantial disturbances in an ecosystem.

Krill Oil BenefitsKrill has been harvested since the 19th century and used as a food source both for humans and domesticated animals. Krill has a salty taste and a shrimp-like flavor.

Over the past few decades, krill oil has been increasingly used as a dietary supplement. When compared to fish oil, it is said that krill oil is relatively freer from heavy metals, dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls. This is due mainly to the fact that the krill stay in lower levels of the ocean. Also, its active ingredients are said to be much more diverse in composition and consequently, is said to impart more benefits in lowering the risk for heart and cardiovascular ailments.

Clinical trials have been published that concluded that it may have lipid lowering and arthritic pain lowering functions. When evaluated, it has been shown that the following are some of the most important nutrients that contribute greatly to krill oil benefits:

(1.) omega-3 fatty acids similar to those found in many species of fish;

(2.) omega-3 fatty acids attached to phospholipids, mainly phosphatidylcholine (also known as marine lecithin);

(3.) astaxanthin, an antioxidant; and

(4) choline, beneficial for brain development.

Krill oil is usually extracted using a mix of ethanol and water. It is done through the cold extraction method which ensures that the beneficial properties of the krill are transferred to the krill oil supplement.

Individuals known to have allergies to shellfish and other similar foods should consult a medical practitioner first before consuming krill oil as they might be allergic to it as well. Krill oil may also slow blood clotting so it is advisable for people undergoing surgery to stop taking this two weeks prior to the operation. Pregnant and nursing women should likewise consult with their doctors before consuming this.

  • Krill oil may help improve the state of the skin and help fight wrinkles.

  • Krill oil may help increase energy and stamina.
