Vitamin K benefits are largely known to the general populace via their blood-clotting abilities.
Vitamin K refers to a group of chemically similar fat-soluble compounds called naphthoquinones. These compounds are needed for the modification of certain proteins in the body, mainly to aid in blood coagulation. In fact, the "K" in Vitamin K is derived from the German word "koagulation".

The two naturally-occuring forms of Vitamin K are Vitamin K1 or phytonadione and Vitamin K2 or menaquinones. Vitamin K1 is the natural form of the vitamin and is commonly found in plants. Vitamin K1 provides the primary source of vitamin K to humans through dietary consumption. On the other hand, Vitamin K2 is composed of bacteria in the human gut and provides a smaller amount of the human vitamin K requirement.

- cauliflower
- brussel sprouts
- mayonnaise

Deficiency in Vitamin K typically results in impaired blood clotting. The symptoms include easy bruising and bleeding. However, Vitamin K deficiency in adults is quite rare as it is quite easily obtainable from food.
The blood-thinning drug warfarin is a known antagonist of vitamin K. People taking warfarin are usually warned to avoid foods with high vitamin K content, as well as vitamin K supplements. On the flip side, vitamin K is used to treat warfarin overdoses or those dealing with excess anticoagulant effects of the drug.
